Today, in the presence of Andrzej Adamczyk, Minister of Infrastructure, NEWAG and PKP Cargo signed a contract for purchase of three DRAGON 2 locomotives. DRAGON 2 is the first in Europe six-axle electric locomotive fully compliant with the Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI 2014) equipped with Level 2 ECTS system. These locomotives use cutting-edge, reliable technologies and ensure highly comfortable working conditions for drivers. The main advantage of DRAGON 2 is a very high tractive force which, combined with a high locomotive weight,a performant antiskid system and an individual drive per each axle, allows it to pull heavy duty freight trains.
“We are very satisfied with our collaboration with NEWAG. They represent Polish know-how, Polish engineers who implement projects up to the highest world standards. Mr President, please accept out gratitude for implementing part of the LUXTORPEDA 2.0 programme, that you are participating in this programme and, as we can see, this has resulted in one of the most cutting-edge locomotives, equipped with the latest technological solutions which can be an object of envy of your competitors. They are fitted with the equipment which works together with traffic control systems and traffic safety control systems – the ECTS. They are representing trains of the future. NEWAG is participating in manufacturing vehicles for the railway of the future, which will come in one, two or ten years’ time or even in 15 and 20 years’ time,” said Andrzej Adamczyk, Minister of Infrastructure.
“Today’s contract for purchase of the DRAGON 2 electric locomotives is part of our development strategy, it is a milestone in our efforts aiming at modernizing our rolling stock because this is what the market needs and what our clients need,” said Czesław Warsewicz, President of PKP Cargo.
“After more than 30 years, this is the first six-axle locomotive purchased by our national carrier – PKP Cargo. I am very proud that DRAGON 2 will go to PKP Cargo but, apart from these locomotives, we also produce EMUs which operate practically all over Poland. We can also see underground trains produced for Sofia, our trains produced for Bari in Italy, our trains are also operating in Sicily. We are concentrating our efforts on producing a dual-traction locomotive which will be able to operate all over Poland: along both electrified tracts and non-electrified tracts,” said Zbigniew Konieczek, President of NEWAG S.A.
