GRIFFIN — the first Polish TSI compliant locomotive

Manufactured at NEWAG, the four-axle E4MSU Griffin electric locomotive, is the first Polish locomotive to be granted a certificate of compliance with TSI.

The Railway Institute confirmed GRIFFIN’s compliance with three Technical Specifications for Interoperability, namely, “Locomotives and passenger rolling stock” (LOC & PAS), “Noise” (NOI) and “Safety in railway tunnels” (SRT), which means that the locomotive’s design meets the technical specifications for interoperability in force in the European Union.

“The fact that GRIFFIN has been officially certified as TSI compliant will facilitate the process of its homologation in other markets,” said Bartosz Krzemiński, Deputy President of NEWAG S.A. “As a three-system locomotive (3kV DC, 15 kV AC and 25 kV AC), E4MSU GRIFFIN may be licensed for operations in most European countries after it passes country-specific tests for rail traffic management systems and safety systems.”

So far, GRIFFIN has been certified for running in the territory of the Republic of Poland and it has been tested by several carriers.

In February 2015, KOLPREM operated a GRIFFIN locomotive on difficult railway routes in Silesia and Małopolska, characterised by 12 per mille tracks, where it smoothly pulled trains of 3270t in weight.

KOLPREM’s train drivers are enthusiastic about GRIFFIN’s state-of-the-art and well-thought out design, meeting their expectations related to traction parameters and comfort of travelling.
“Thanks to its very efficient suspension, when driving a GRIFFIN, the driver feels as if he was driving along new infrastructure,” said Adam Dej, KOLPREM’s instructor.

A spacious and ergonomic driver’s cab, low noise level and LED lighting are among GRIFFIN’S other advantages.
